I’ve been wanting to try acai bowls since they started getting trendy a few years ago. They look so fun and colorful! I haven’t been able to find a restaurant that makes them locally, so I looked up how to make them and realized they are actually quite easy to make. Best part, they are very easy to customize with the toppings you want!
I’ve never seen an actual acai fruit and after looking into them, apparently they only grow in warmer climates and are a primary product of brazil. I’m a Trader Joe’s lover and found frozen acai packets there that are conveniently packed in single serving containers. You run the packet under water for about 30 seconds to break it up a little and then you can add the still mainly frozen mix to your blender.
In addition to the Acai, I made my smoothie bowl with spinach, pineapple, mixed berries, and banana. You can really customize the fruits (and veggies) you put it, which makes it easy to use what you have at home. As far as toppings go, I chose fresh rasberries because they are one of my favorite fruits. I used raw hazelnuts because they are my favorite raw nut lately and hemp hearts because they are a very nutritious addition to smoothies. Fun fact, did you know that Hemp Hearts contain more protein and omegas and less carbs than the same serving of chia or flax? They taste similar to chopped nuts or flax seeds. I couldn’t find this same flavor on Amazon, but linked a different flavor of the same brand here.
I also added chocolate chips because let’s be real, everything tastes better with chocolate. I love the Enjoy Life brand because they taste like regular chocolate chips but they’re gluten, dairy, nut-free, soy-free, paleo. Oh and some toasted coconut!
Verdict at my house: two thumbs up! My husband and 9 month old both enjoyed the bowl and I can’t wait to try some more variations of this deliciousness!
